COVINGTON, La. (AP) — Covington Fire Chief Richard Badon (BAD-anh) says two boys were seriously burned and a teacher and a third boy suffered minor burns during a science camp chemistry experiment.
Badon says the teacher was burned getting the boys out of danger and putting out the fire Monday morning in the chemistry lab at St. Scholastica Academy.
He says the experiment used sugar, sand, baking soda and burning alcohol to turn white sugar to black carbon. Websites show those ingredients used for homemade "black snake" fireworks.
Badon says the seriously burned boys, aged 8 to 10, have been sent to burn units in Shreveport and Baton Rouge. He says the teacher drove to a hospital after treatment by paramedics, and the third boy was released to his parents after treatment by paramedics.
