Pharmacies aren't the only spot offering diabetics extra resources and education.

The Hillsborough County Health Department offers a free diabetes self-management education series throughout the year for Type 2 diabetics.

The Manage Your Diabetes series meets for 1½ hours each week and addresses eating, exercise, medication and basics about the disease that affects more than 25 million American adults.

Classes are held in four locations: Town 'N Country, Ruskin, Sun City Center and Plant City. Those communities are home to some of the county's highest diabetes-related death rates, says Melanie Gibson, a health department nutritionist.

Adults diagnosed with diabetes are eligible for the six-week series led by a certified diabetes educator or licensed health care provider. Pre-registration is required.

Call (813) 307-8071 for more information or to register for an upcoming series.
