The eighth case of rabies in Polk County in 2012 has been confirmed by the sheriff's office Animal Control Section.
On Monday, a bat was impounded by Animal Control from Summerlin Academy in Bartow. The school's commandant said a girl reportedly touched the bat; however, the child had not been identified at the time of the report.
The bat was sent for testing and was confirmed positive for rabies by the State Laboratory today.
The Polk County Health Department is working with the school to identify the child.
