HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's wife, Cathy, is joining U.S. Rep. John Larson to unveil plans for a new 4,000-square-foot children's fitness and wellness center in the Parkville section of Hartford.
Cathy Malloy and Larson released details of the facility during a Friday morning event organized by Hartford-based nonprofit Family Life Education.
The center is intended to provide low-income families with free access to comprehensive fitness and wellness programs. It aims to address health issues facing Connecticut children, including obesity and malnutrition.
Available services are expected to include child development screening, cooking demonstrations, community gardening and movement workshops.
Family Life Education executive director Candida Flores said the next step is a capital campaign.
Efforts to establish the center came in response to first lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign.
