KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Several dozen mothers gathered at a West Michigan park and for one minute breastfed their children as part of an international effort to remove stigmas of nursing in public and increase awareness about the benefits of breast milk.
MLive.com reports (http://bit.ly/14SpY7l ) that 47 women participated Saturday in The Big Latch On at Kalamazoo's Bronson Park. The event and others like it across the globe also sought to break a world record of 8,862 women publicly breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding took place quietly from 10:30 a.m. to 10:31 a.m. Many of the mothers were joined by fathers, parents and friends.
Medical professionals say breastfeeding is one of the most effective preventive health measures for infants and mothers, yet only one-third of babies are breastfed in the U.S.
