Gators QB Murphy transferring

GAINESVILLE - The day after graduating from the University of Florida, quarterback Tyler Murphy told Gators coach Will Muschamp he has decided to transfer and play at another school.

Connecticut could be among the schools he will look at, since that is his home state.

Murphy played in nine games this past season, taking over the starting role after Jeff Driskel suffered a broken leg. He threw for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions. While Murphy helped rally UF past Tennessee when Driskel went down, he struggled the second half of the season with a shoulder injury and missed the last three games of the year.

Muschamp had told media at the end of the season that the 2014 quarterback job would be an open competition. Driskel hopes to be available for spring practice, as should Skyler Mornhinweg, who started the final three games - all UF losses - after Murphy couldn’t play.

But Murphy, who has one year of elgibility left, has elected to seek playing time elsewhere and should be able to play right away since he has graduated.

The Gators finished 4-8 and without a bowl bid for the first time since NCAA sanctions in 1990.
