Given America’s current infatuation with craft beer, it’s hard to believe a beer-flavored jelly bean didn’t exist before now.
Luckily for beer lovers, gourmet jelly bean maker Jelly Belly has stepped up to fill that void by introducing draft beer-flavored beans at the Winter Fancy Food show in San Francisco this week.
“This took about three years to perfect,” Ambrose Lee, research and development manager for Jelly Belly Candy Company, said in a news release. “The recipe includes top secret ingredients, but I can tell you it contains no alcohol.”
The company opted to pay homage to its German ancestry with a Hefeweizen-inspired ale flavor that “is clean with notes of wheat and a touch of sweetness,” and an aroma that is “mildly bready,” according to Jelly Belly.
Though no official date was given, the company said the Draft Beer Jelly Bellies would be available in stores in early 2014.
The new beans join a list of exotic Jelly Belly flavors that include Buttered Popcorn and Tabasco Dark Chocolate.
