New tables let you pong it up in Gaslight Park

Need a break from work? How about some ping-pong in the middle of downtown?

On Monday, if the answer to both of these is “yes”, your wish has been granted.

Lykes Gaslight Square Park is now home to a permanent ping-pong table thanks to Urban Conga. A $1000 grant was given to Urban Conga from Awesome Tampa Bay whose goal is to bring awesome ideas to Tampa and make the city a better place.

Friday, Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Ryan Swanson of Urban Conga broke the table in by playing the first match. Now free ping pong is at your disposal in the park.

So, why a ping pong table?

It all started when three USF graduates decided to create a way to add activity and play to underutilized spaces, they call their non-profit Urban Conga and they are to thank for your lunch break fun. The goal is to put more ping pong tables around Tampa as funding allows.

Remember it’s no cost to play, but to keep everyone honest, a $10 deposit is required. Urban Juice, located at 510 N Franklin St, will handle paddle and ball distribution until Holy Hog BBQ opens in August.
