Every year, The Tampa Theatre hosts an Oscar party when the best movies are honored. Now, the theater has been given an Oscar-sized honor in return.
The Motion Picture Association of America has listed the historic theater in downtown Tampa among the 10 best movie theaters in the world in an article on its website, TheCredits.org.
The MPAA, a trade organization that represents the major film studios, is best known as the organization that hands out ratings on films.
The other theaters on the list include the State Theater in Traverse City, Mich.; Ciné 32 in Auch, France; the Busan Cinema Center in South Korea; Cinémathèque Française in Paris, France; Sun Pictures Cinema in Broome, Australia; Cine Thisio in Athens, Greece; the Raj Mandir Theatre in Jaipur, India; Archipelago Cinema in Thailand; and the Matadero Cineteca in Madrid, Spain.
The Tampa Theatre opened on Oct. 15, 1926, and recently entered the digital age when it installed new projection equipment.
