Scott Bakula talks role on 'SVU'

Something on tonight's episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" may look familiar.

Scott Bakula guest stars as Kent Webster in a new episode titled "Vanity's Bonfire," where he plays a prominent New York City law professor with a sick wife who is accused by his mistress of fathering her child.

"I did a little bit of research on some of the story surrounding John Edwards and some of the press conferences and things that he went through," Bakula said. "I'm always interested in trying to just find the human angle."

John Edwards is a former U.S. senator who ran for president twice and fathered a child with his mistress while his wife, now deceased, battled cancer.

Bakula didn't want to reveal too much but promised lots of surprises for viewers.

" 'SVU' is always about things that are never quite exactly what you think they're going to be," he said. "That's the fun of it; trying to figure it out. It's always fun to mess with the audience's head a little bit."

"Law & Order: SVU" airs at 9 p.m. tonight on NBC.
