Sea lions, lemurs arrive at Tampa animal attractions

Two of Tampa's most popular animal attractions have new critters to see.

At the Florida Aquarium, a new permanent exhibit titled Journey to Madagascar opened Saturday, offering an up-close look at ring-tailed lemurs, hissing cockroaches, chameleons and other animals that inhabit the island nation off the coast of Africa.

Also on Saturday, the Lowry Park Zoo debuted its limited-time Sea Lion Splash attraction, featuring a colony of coastal sea lions trained to demonstrate natural behaviors such as flips and barks on cue, the zoo said.

Sea Lion Splash runs through May 31, with daily performances at 10:45 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Admission is $2, in addition to regular zoo admission.

Journey to Madagascar is included with regular admission to the Florida Aquarium. The new exhibit replaced the former Aquariumania Gallery located above the Wetlands Trail.
