Moonlighting: The Round Up

The Round Up Country & Western Club, 13918 W. Hillsborough Ave. Tampa; (813) 855-1464

The Venue: A (square) dance floor bigger than some houses; mechanical bull, pool tables and multiple drinking posts. Get the rowdy picture?

Hours: 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday

The Allure: Traditional and modern style mesh into a lively country atmosphere with attractive drink specials.

Possible Grievances: Some people are a little "too country" for their own good.

Last Call: Yee-haw everybody, let's rock! That's the vibe one will get as they step into what looks like a giant-roller skating rink turned "country club" and we're not talking about the ones that require khaki pants and polo shirts. Put it this way, they play dodgeball (on Mondays) in this playground.

The Round Up endorses a casual time – evident by the guys in shorts, jeans and T-shirts. Women strut in cut-off shorts and flannel shirts (they make it work). A portion of the crowd will be wearing cowboy hats, but if you don't have the gear to look the part, everyone is still encouraged to join in the line-dancing shenanigans.

Sink or Swim Saturday nights are by far more crowded than the advertised Blue Collar Friday nights, mainly due to a $12 all-you-can-drink promo. Thursday nights is for the ladies as a $7 cover will get them free drinks all night. They do throw the guys a bone though as they are allowed to freely destroy their livers from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m on this night.

Basically, if it's jam-packed, this could turn into a stumbling mess in all sectors of the bar. And trust me, some of the tightly-wound bouncers are itching to enforce their "power" and stomp a mud-hole in patrons who get out of the line.

Overall, this joint has a college-bar vibe, yet the clientele is a melting-pot of people looking to chill, line-dance to a variety of tunes and just have a hearty old time.
