Lovett brings down house with basics in Tampa

Lyle Lovett don’t need no Large Band to bring down the house.

Lovett stripped down to the basics for Monday’s acoustic show at the Tampa Theatre, setting boots and high heels tapping with his signature combination of country, blues, gospel, jazz and Western swing.

The set list hopscotched across the Texas-born singer’s 14 albums, including crowd favorites like “If I had a Boat” and “She’s no Lady.” The five-piece backing band provided plenty of firepower for rollicking songs like “Private Conversation” and beautiful, sometimes mournful pickin’ and fiddlin’ for more spare, soul-baring songs like “Nobody Knows Me.”

By the time Lovett got to “You’re not from Texas,” the crowd was firmly his, singing along and whooping and hollering for more.
