FlowRider competition coming to Clearwater surf shop

Published:

Thousands of dollars in prizes will be on the line for “riders” who can outshine the competition on an indoor surf machine in Clearwater Beach.

The Carbon U.S. National Flow Tour, a competitive tour for the budding sport of flowboarding, will stop at the Surf Style surf shop, at 311 S. Gulfview Blvd., on Aug. 27.

The event, offering more than $6,500 in cash and merchandise prizes, will feature some of the world’s top professional riders, but will also include an open competition for amateurs of all ages in the flow board and body board divisions.

The Clearwater Beach stop will be the last competition before the finals Aug. 31 in New Jersey.

During the competition, each rider is given three runs. Scores are based on tricks and run execution, as well as overall impression and difficulty. There will also be a best-trick contest with a separate prize.

Competitors can register at surfstyle.com for $35 to $40.

Surf Style will open to spectators at 8 a.m. on event day with a Rider Sandals try-and-buy booth, foosball tables, prize giveaways, deals and other special events.

The two-story, 55,000-square-foot store opened in 2011 as the largest of the chain’s 23 locations.

The jet-propelled FlowRider surf machine, which can be ridden with a special flow board or a regular body board, was purchased from the Adrenalina store at International Plaza in Tampa when that store closed down.

Visitors to the store can ride the FlowRider for $20 per half-hour.
