Busch Gardens says that even non-human teenagers deserve a “sweet 16.”
That's why the Tampa theme park is celebrating the 16th birthday of Bornean orangutan Luna Bella on Saturday with a birthday party that includes special activities for Luna and for park guests.
At 12:30 p.m. at the park's Orangutan Outpost, the animal care team will lavish Luna Bella with special treats and gifts. Beginning at 2 p.m., there will be children's activities and learning opportunities at the Orangutan Outpost, and special deals on merchandise in the Tiger Treasures gift shop.
Luna Bella, known for her outgoing personality and antics, has been a part of Busch Gardens' Jungala attraction since it opened in 2008. When she was 10, the curious 85-pound primate made headlines when she managed to get outside of her habitat at the then-new exhibit, climbing up a viewing window and out onto the roof. Luna Bella was there for about an hour before her caretakers coaxed her back in.
On Saturday, in honor of Luna Bella's Birthday, a portion of any orangutan-themed souvenir sales will be donated to the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Conservation Fund.
