Broadway shows return to Straz

TAMPA - The acrobatics of Pippin, the smooth sounds of Motown and the music of the night celebrated the upcoming Broadway season at the Straz Center on Monday night.

The nearly 1,000 attendees - mostly season-ticket holders - were brought to their feet when performers from "Motown the Musical'' previewed their show.

Radio host Seth Rudetsky entertained with anecdotes of Broadway and introduced clips and live performances of the upcoming season, which includes "Dirty Dancing,'' "Annie,'' "Phantom of the Opera'' and "Beauty and the Beast.''

Straz president Judy Lisi kicked things off, literally, without a shoe in tribute to another of the season's offerings, Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella.''
