AT THE MOVIES

Opening Friday

Andrew Garfield is back as the acrobatic web-slinger in “The Amazing Spider Man 2,” which finds Peter Parker trying to find balance in his life just as new enemies (Jamie Foxx) emerge to challenge him.

 

BURGERS AFTER WORK?

Friday

Beefy bragging rights will be on the line when Tampa area restaurants compete at the downtown Burger Showdown in Curtis Hixon Park. Get a drink ticket all the burger samples your belly can handle for $20 to $25.

 

TAMPA'S COUNTRY GIRL

Friday

Hometown girl turned Nashville star Caroline Kole will take a break from touring with Reba McEntire to take the stage at Skipper's Smokehouse. Tickets are $7.

 

CAN YOU HANDLE THE TRUTH?!

Through May 18

Stageworks theater presents the stage version of “A Few Good Men,” the tale of a Navy lawyer who squares off with a Marine commander at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba, where a young Private has been beaten to death. Tickets are $26 to $35.

 

AND .... ACTION!

Through Sunday

The Sunscreen Film Festival will shine the spotlight on more than 100 small-budget and independent films at screenings at multiple venues in St. Petersburg. Screening tickets run $8 to $10.

 

SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND

Friday to Sunday

Big bands, little bands, four stages, food trucks, thrill rides, conceptual art and more take over the MidFlorida Amphitheatre and Florida State Fairgrounds for the Big Guava Music Festival. Read our previews here. Single day tickets are $75 plus fees.

 

BANG, POW, BOOM

Saturday

It's Free Comic Book Day! Show up at an independent Tampa Bay area comic book shop, get free comic books — it's that simple. In addition, a lot of shops are planning artist signings, photo ops with costumed characters, food, big sales and more.

 

SHARK TALES

Saturday and Sunday

Learn what you can do to save sharks and help restore and protect the ocean at the inaugural Shark Con, which also includes seminars, hands-on exhibits, shark movies and more. Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for children.

 

DERBY DAY

Saturday

Break out your fancy hat as Tampa Bay Downs in Tampa and Derby Lane in St. Petersburg host Kentucky Derby watch parties that include themed food, drinks and legal wagering. At Tampa Bay Downs, $49.95 gets you a buffet lunch, a program and a mint julep in a collectible glass. Admission at Derby Lane is free.

 

EXPLOSIVE FAREWELL

Sunday

MOSI is sending off its' “MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibit” with a bang as USF engineers demonstrate creative combustions at the “1, 2, 3 .. Oops” event. The exhibit closes May 8. Admission is $24.95 adults, $21.95 seniors, $19.95 for kids.

 

WHAT'S ON DRAFT?

(Thursday)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will throw open the doors to Raymond James Stadium and invite fans to watch the first round of the NFL draft with food and drink discounts, kids activities and the Bucs cheerleaders. Entry and parking for the draft party is free.
