Tampa restaurant featured on Animal Planet’s ‘Tanked’ tonight

Published:

The Tropical Smoothie Café in downtown Tampa will appear in the season premiere of the Animal Planet reality series “Tanked,” which airs tonight at 9.

The show follows custom aquarium builders Wayde King and Brett Raymer as they travel the country building exotic, outrageous and one-of-a-kind fish tanks for their customers.

The Tropical Smoothie Café episode was filmed on location last summer at the restaurant at 200 N. Tampa St., after owner Rob Szasz saw “Tanked” and wrote to the show’s producers.

Szasz purposely left the window area vacant when he opened the restaurant in 2010, in hopes of eventually displaying a salt-water aquarium, a press release said.

“Our ultimate goal was for this tank to exemplify our ‘Tropitude’,” Strasz said in a statement. “The first time I saw ‘Tanked,’ I just knew it would be the perfect way to collaborate and make that dream a reality.”

The café’s 200-gallon tank was built in the shape of a giant smoothie and is home to 65 fish, including clown fish, angelfish and tangs.
