A house fire started by a child on Wednesday night caused heavy smoke damage to a Town 'N Country home, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said.
Firefighters responded at around 6 p.m. to the home, located at 6004 West Fern St., where there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the house.
The fire then spread to a screened porch attached to the house, the fire department said.
Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes. One woman and four children were home at the time of the fire. No one was injured, the fire department said.
Fire investigators said a child at the home was playing with a lighter and set some paper on fire near a shed, the fire department said. The child and family will take a fire intervention and education program sponsored by the fire department.
The inside of home sustained significant smoke damage, fire officials said, and the family won't be able to live in their home until significant repairs are made. The Red Cross was called to assist the family.
