SOUTH TAMPA -

The owner of Frankie’s hot dog joint closed the business’ doors this month.

He will open them again in May, this time to a completely different restaurant.

The Outpost, a sports pub serving about 200 different beers, will open in the same location at 909 W. Kennedy Blvd. late next month.

Mike Diogostine, who opened Frankie’s five years ago, said he was ready to do something different.

“I wanted to create a place where people can hang out more,” he said.

A sports bar with a large outdoor patio and live music seemed like a good idea, given the restaurant’s proximity to the University of Tampa’s new lacrosse stadium and residence hall, he said.

Diogostine still is finalizing menu, but it will include typical bar food such as cheese steaks and wings as well as healthier options, he said. The bar will serve draft and canned beers.

“I’m trying to make it a little different,” he said.

One of his favorite things about the Outpost is the bar, Diogostine said. It was built with wood that came from a 100-year-old barn in Chicago. The wood still has flecks of old paint on it.

“I think it’s pretty cool,” he said.

And it has been fun for Diogostine and his partners to start from scratch with a new sports bar concept.

“The whole place will be brand new when we’re done with it,” Diogostine said.
