Published:   |   Updated: October 10, 2013 at 03:10 PM

SATURDAY

Veterans events: The Veteran’s Council of Hillsborough plans a field of honor ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park and Museum, 3602 U.S. 301. The public ceremony is conducted every three months to honor those who have lost their lives in the last three months. The names of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who died are read aloud and a flag is placed in the field in their honor. Amvets Post 44 of Brandon hosts this quarter’s ceremony.

In conjunction with the event, the Veterans Christmas in October takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the same location. It features engraved bricks or granite plaques available for purchase, T-shirts, handmade items for your veteran, military coins, ribbons and badges, military displays and vehicles, silent auctions, food and drink, and museum tours. Proceeds benefit park expansion.

Both events are open to the public. For details, call (813) 653-4924.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

Hot rod reunion: The 26th annual Southeast Street Rod Nationals, presented by the National Street Rod Association, rolls into the Florida State Fairgrounds, 4800 U.S. 301 N. Or, if you like boats: The Florida State Fairgrounds also hosts the Tampa Bay Boat Show in the Expo Hall. The event showcases area boat dealers and manufacturers, the latest in boating and fishing supplies, and accessories, too.

This event is a way for people to compare various makes and models, and is free to the public. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Parking is $6.

SUNDAY

See zoo for six bucks: The $6 Day returns to Lowry Park Zoo, 1101 W. Sligh Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit your favorite zoo animals and learn about endangered wildlife for $6 per person.

Free extra parking is available next to the Tampa Greyhound Track with shuttles running continuously throughout the day. Due to this discount, zoo rides are not included with admission on $6 Day.

For information, call (813) 935-8552 or go to www.lowryparkzoo.com.

OCT. 18

More zoo zaniness: You also can watch the Lowry Park Zoo animals have their own Halloween party at a “pumpkin toss” at 11 a.m. Friday. See which critters stomp, chomp, kick, play and pounce on their seasonal treats.

The pumpkin toss is part of the animal enrichment program at the zoo and is included with regular zoo admission. For details, call (813) 935-8552 or go to www.lowryparkzoo.com.
