Marine flag presented to Rays

Published:

Thousands of miles from the Tampa Bay Rays’ Tropicana Field, on Sept. 28, 2013, an American flag dedicated to the Rays was flown over Marine headquarters at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan.

On Easter Sunday, April 20, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Robert J. Silah presented that flag to Tampa Bay Rays President Matthew Silverman at St. Petersburg’s Tropicana Field.

Silah is chairman of Operation Helping Hand, which for the past 10 years has been providing assistance to active-duty wounded and injured from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are being treated at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa. Assistance is also provided to their families. Operation Helping Hand is an all-volunteer organization.

In a joint effort between the Tampa Bay Rays and Operation Helping Hand, an opportunity is provided for the wounded and injured from Iraq and Afghanistan to attend Rays games with their families.
