Students at 10 Hillsborough County public schools will get protection from the Florida sun while playing outdoors thanks to covers that will be built with a donation from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Eight other covers have already been installed in the past three years as part of Fitness Zones the Bucs have sponsored. Three additional schools have a chance to earn Fitness Zones, too.
The effort is part of the Bucs Care Schools initiative, showcased during a ceremony Monday at B.T. Washington Elementary School on Estelle Street near Nebraska Avenue.
Like other schools benefitting from the program, Washington Elementary is a Title I school with a high proportion of poor students.
In addition to the Fitness Zone, Bucs Care Schools promotes healthy minds and bodies through help with curriculum and the donation of backpacks and school supplies. All told, an estimated 10,000 students in Tampa Bay will benefit from the program.
