Things to do in the Brandon area this weekend

Critters in costume: Aliquity, a nonprofit group, sponsors its annual Dog Fest from 1 to 4 p.m. at FishHawk Ranch, 5925 Village Center Drive in Lithia. The event features vendors, displays, demonstrations, samples, contests and raffle prizes, all dog related. Events include a costume contest, cutest puppy contest and a pet parade. (There is a $5 fee for the contests.) Proceeds are donated to local dog-related charities.

V-Dubs and Chevys: The Plant City Strawberry Classic Car Show rolls into McCall Park, 102 N. Palmer St., from 4 to 9 p.m. Entry and admission is free, and registration opens at 3 p.m. The show is open to 1988 and older cars and trucks and select specialty vehicles. October’s featured vehicles are Volkswagens and Chevrolets.

There will be oldies music, food, vendors, kids’ activities and more.

Pilseners and pets: Taste from more than 90 brands of beer while helping to support The Humane Society of Polk County at the “Pints for Paws Lakeland Beer Festival,” from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Lakeland Center, 701 W. Lime St. in Lakeland. The pet-friendly beer festival includes beer samplings along with a mini food truck rally and live entertainment. Leashed pets are welcome in the event area in the north arena parking area.

Tickets are $30 plus service charges and are available at the Lakeland Center Box Office, by calling 1-888-397-0100, or at thelakelandcenter.com. You must be 21 years or older to attend.

Upgrade your abode: Florida’s Largest Home Show returns to the Florida State Fairgrounds, 4800 U.S. 301 N., Saturday and Sunday.

Celebrating 27 years of home shows, the event features more than 900 exhibits of the latest products in home remodeling, decorating, landscaping and furnishings. See what’s new, talk to the experts and enjoy daily seminars.

Show times are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8; $7 for seniors and military; and free to children 12 and under. Parking is $6.

Fair in final days: The Hillsborough County Fair continues at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds on State Road 60 at Sydney Washer Road. In addition to the midway, special attractions include a Firefighters’ Show, Heidi Herriott’s Family Fun Circus and Robinson’s Racing Pigs.

Gates are open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for seniors, $5 for children ages 6 through high school, and free for age 5 and younger. For details, go to hillsboroughcountyfair.com.
