The 2007 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship local qualification event will take place May 12 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Summerfield Crossings Golf Club in Riverview.

The championship is open to amateur and professional golfers of all skill levels. Every participant has a chance to win. The event takes place in more than 400 communities around the world, where golfers of all sizes, shapes, ages and skill levels compete in qualification events. Competitors try to earn their right to compete in the district qualifier, and ultimately, the finals of the 2007 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship.

More than 20,000 participants are expected to compete at the local level in more than 16 countries. There are multi-airings of the finals on ESPN, and also in Canada, Japan and much of Europe throughout the year.

The open division includes golfers of all ages; the senior division is open to golfers 45 and older; the super senior division is for golfers ages 53 to 60 and the grand champion division is for men, age 61 and older. Women may compete in a ladies division.

The finals of the 2007 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship will take place October 22-27 at the Palms Golf Club in Mesquite, Nev. The total purse will be $500,000.

In 2006, champion Jason Zuback hit the winning drive of 377 yards.
