A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy got a surprise this morning when a student handed him a "thank you" note for patrolling the school in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings.
About 7 a.m., Cpl. Lance Connors was in the drop-off area of Mango Elementary School when a girl walked past him and he said, "Good morning."
The girl stopped, removed a folder piece of paper from her backpack and handed it to Connors.
The note reads: "Dear officers thank you for making my school safe merry Chrismas." She drew a heart and signed, "Karmen."
Connors yelled a quick "thank you" as she headed to class.
"It made my day," Connors said. "I know the sheriff pays me to do this job, but Karmen's note was better than money."
