Man, 62, killed by train near U.S. 301 and Adamo

A 62-year-old man, who was reported missing earlier this week, was killed Wednesday evening when he walked in front of a train in the Brandon area.

About 5:50 p.m., Dwight Antonio Hamilton, of 4801 River Grass Court, Tampa, was walking west in the middle of the tracks approaching Highway 301 near Adamo Drive, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The CSX train engineer blew horn to alert Hamilton, and he appeared to step off of the track, turned around and looked at the train that was going about 40 mph, the sheriff’s office said. Then, he turned back into the train and was struck.

Detectives learned that another crew saw Hamilton walking and dancing in the middle of the tracks earlier in the day.

Detectives are unsure if the incident was a case of suicide or an accident because Hamilton suffered from dementia.

His daughter had reported him missing on Monday when he did not meet her at a bus stop after church as they had planned, the sheriff’s office said.
