BRANDON – Sewing Rockstars, Carmen Wilson’s sewing class, teaches kids how to sew on Fridays at Gigi’s Fabric Shop.
When she noticed that her Sewing Rockstars were “crazy about sewing, I knew they would love to sew for other children, too,” she said. So she came up with a way to encourage “kids helping kids in our community.”
She invited her students to use their new sewing powers for good on Saturdays at her Kids Sewing 4Kids club. That’s where they create things for other children.
On Oct. 12, four girls and two moms cranked out 23 Halloween trick-or-treat bags to give to children at A Kid’s Place, Brandon’s state-of-the-art residential facility for foster children.
Wilson was surprised all the bags were completed in a day.
“And they are all willing to come back to make pillowcases for A Kid’s Place for Christmas. What a dream come true for me,” said Wilson. “One of my goals was to help in the community, and I think it’s working.”
Kids aren’t the only ones who can have fun sewing for others. Adults are invited to a Sit N Sew Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, and Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Gigi’s Fabric Shop to make pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer, helping kids fight cancer one colorful pillowcase at a time.
To get in on the fun, contact Wilson at (813) 376-5015 or firstname.lastname@example.org, or visit www.gigisfabricshop.com or Gigi’s Fabric Shop, 105 S. Moon Ave.
