Clair-Mel City man dies after van strikes utility pole

A 47-year-old man died Wednesday after his van drove off the road and struck a utility pole in Clair-Mel City.

Manuel Blanco, 47, of 7715 Wishing Well Lane, Clair-Mel City, was seriously injured about 8:30 a.m. when the 1999 Plymouth Voyager he was driving struck a wooden utility pole on 78th Street, south of Palm River Road, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office.

Fire Rescue extricated Blanco from the van and he was taken to a hospital where he died.

According to investigators, Blanco was southbound on 78th Street when he drove onto the west shoulder and struck the pole, according to the sheriff’s office.

Florida Highway Patrol is on the scene and has closed one lane southbound lane of 78th Street while TECO makes repairs, according to the sheriff’s office. The repairs are expected to take two to three hours.

The sheriff’s office recommends drivers avoid the area.
