As a professional musician and comedian, David Tillery of Carrollwood knows it’s not just about the message, but also the delivery.
He recently opened the first Mighty Dwarf store in the United States, selling a product that delivers 360-degree sound by turning any flat surface into a speaker.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Tillery, who plays the guitar, keyboard and saxophone. “When you see it in action, it’s absolutely amazing.”
Tillery opened his Mighty Dwarf store at the Westfield Brandon Mall on July 1. He celebrated with a Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 13.
Tillery, 50, grew up in the era of boom boxes and portable cassette players, but he believes his products are the modern “tech toys” people will want this Christmas.
“These devices produce sound using vibration technology turning any flat hard surfaced into a speaker, from a glass window, hood of a car, wall, cooler or coffee table,” he said. “They are built with a lithium ion battery, which makes them rechargeable, so you do not have to keep buying batteries. They are Bluetooth, so they pair wirelessly to any smartphone or Bluetooth device, so you do not need cables. They have a built-in speaker phone, so you don’t need your phone to answer a call.”
Sam Merenda, an employee at Gold Pros at the Brandon mall, said he is impressed with the product.
“These are fantastic and are perfect for any outdoor event,” Merenda said.
Tillery said customers have reported excellent results using the product for barbecues and tailgating. “If you put it on the hood of your car, your whole car will turn into a speaker,” Tillery said.
Tillery said the products are being used in scientific underwater experiments as well as sound studies. People are also exploring how the product can be used to create sound markers to help the visually impaired navigate their surroundings.
An authorized supplier of Mighty Dwarf products, Tillery sells the Mighty Dwarf Vibro 360 Sound Speaker with built-in MP3 as well as the BlueII Bluetooth version. His shop also sells accessories such as cards, adapters, readers, car and home chargers, glass and porous surface mounts, gel pads to put on the bottom of the speakers and carry bags.
Mighty Dwarf’s head office is in Canada, but the company has warehouses in Canada as well as the United States and China.
Tillery lives in Carrollwood with his wife, Caroleen. They have been married for 26 years and have two grown children and two grandchildren. He chose to open his store in Westfield Brandon because of the wide range of people, including teenagers and senior citizens, who visit the mall.
“There are so many applications from real estate, sales to musicians and people who just want really good portable music,” he said, adding senior citizens tell him they blast their music by mounting the devices on Styrofoam coolers by the pool.
Some of the uses, he said, include Realtors or home sales people placing the product in cabinets to create talking displays during open houses, or merchants mounting them inside windows, thus having a “talking” window display for those passing by.
“Wherever you go, you can have a portable speaker phone so it’s great for office meetings,” he said.
