BurgerMonger bringing its brand of beef to Brandon

BRANDON - A monger is a person who deals or trades a specific commodity. For an upcoming business in Brandon, that commodity is high-end, hand-crafted burgers.

The owners of BurgerMonger, a St. Petersburg-based chain, have signed a lease to open a 3,000-square-foot restaurant at Bloomingdale Square in Brandon. The plaza, located at the intersection of Bloomingdale Avenue and Bell Shoals Road, features a Walmart, Publix, Chipotle Mexican Grill and more.

The Brandon BurgerMonger will be the chain's fourth location and the third in the Tampa Bay area. The first restaurant opened in Carrollwood in 2011, followed by a location in Wesley Chapel in March 2012.

BurgerMonger's third location is scheduled to open later this month in Willow Grove, Pa. The chain's co-owners, Jake Hickton and Bob Slane, first linked up at Hickton's Pittsburgh restaurant, Jake's Above the Square.

The restaurant gets the beef for its burgers and hot dogs exclusively from HeartBrand Beef, the only source of Akaushi beef in the United States. The beef from Akaushi, a breed of Japanese cattle, contains a higher concentration of monounsaturated fat compared to saturated fat, which can lead to lower cholesterol and the prevention of coronary heart disease.

An opening date for the Brandon location has not been scheduled.
