Gators’ Larry Scott on Miami, ‘that other school down south’

GAINESVILLE — Tight ends coach Larry Scott hasn't even been with the Gators for a month, but he already understands the state's rivalries well.

The former Miami interim coach referred to his old program as "that other school down south" during his first session with reporters Thursday.

Ouch.

Miami and the Gators have an interesting history; they played almost every year from 1938-1987 before the series ceased becoming an annual event so Florida could play a more national schedule, as the Gators' site chronicles here.

The teams last met in 2013 and will open the 2019 season against each other in Orlando.

Scott wasn't one of those coaches who completely avoids saying names of his former schools, and he sounded appreciative of the opportunity he received when the Hurricanes named him interim coach after Al Golden's dismissal in 2015. Scott went 4-2 in that span to help Miami make it to the Sun Bowl.

"It was an experience that you can't take away. …" Scott said. "Just that experience and sitting in that chair gives you the perspective. Everything in life's about perspective."

Check back later for more on Scott, a member of USF's inaugural football team.
