Don't be alarmed if you see folks dressed in flamboyant leather outfits and big hair and makeup strolling around Ybor City on Friday.
They haven't travelled back in time – thank goodness – they're most likely heading to a night of rock 'n' roll at the “The Big Hair Ball” at The Ritz Ybor, featuring Journey and Bon Jovi tribute bands.
“(The bands) sing their songs and they dress like them,” said Okesene “Okie” Tilo, The Ritz Ybor spokesperson. “It's going to be a classic '80s concert.”
The Bon Jovi tribute band, “Livin' on a Prayer,” will take the Ritz stage at 8 p.m. for the first half of the concert. The performers, with front man Donny Ferrari, will belt out signature Bon Jovi hits including “You Give Love A Bad Name,” “Livin' On A Prayer,” “Wanted Dead Or Alive” and “It's My Life.”
Then, after a blowout and a little more hair spray, the group returns for the second act as “Never Stop Believin',” a Journey tribute band. The group pays homage to the '80s supergroup, (Ferrari is a dead ringer for Steve Perry), with tunes such as “Don't Stop Believin,” “Anyway You Want It,” “Faithfully,” and “Open Arms.”
“These tribute bands are so passionate about what they're playing,” said Tilo. “New York does a big '80s prom event, we just want to do our own version of it and have live bands take the stage.”
And it's go big or go home for the “Big Hair Rockstar Costume Contest” – get out that diffuser and tease-comb – the winner gets a $500 cash prize for best '80s get-up.
