Veteran country music star Merle Haggard will soon bring songs such as "Today I Started Loving You Again," and "Okie From Muskogee" to the Mahaffey Theater, according to a media release from the Mahaffey.

The singer, songwriter and self described "poet of the common man" is scheduled to play the downtown St. Petersburg venue on Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale through the Mahaffey's ticket office or at tickets.themahaffey.com. for prices ranging from $39.50 to $59.50.

Haggard, 75, has continued touring almost non-stop in recent years, returning to performing just months after undergoing treatment for lung cancer in 2008.

Scoring his first No. 1 hit with 1966's "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive," Haggard is often credited with helping to pioneer the "outlaw country" movement that became popular in the 1970s.

In April 2010 he released his most recent album, "I Am What I Am." In December 2010 Haggard received a lifetime achievement award for "outstanding contribution to American culture" at the Kennedy Center Honors.
