The Mahaffey Theater will rock out in 2014.

The downtown St. Petersburg venue announced it will host "American Idiot," the rock opera based on the music of Green Day on April 8, and One Night of Queen, a tribute concert to the British rock band Queen on April 16.

Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday at noon through themahaffey.com or by calling (727) 893-7832. "American Idiot" tickets will run $39.50 to $69.50. Tickets for One Night of Queen are $37.50 and $47.50.

"American Idiot" received two Tony Awards in 2010 for best set design and lighting design and also was nominated for Best Musical. Based on punk rock band Green Day's 2004 Grammy-winning album of the same name, "American Idiot" is an edgy story of sex, drugs and lifelong friends forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of the suburbs.

The musical features Green Day hits such as "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Holiday," "Give Me Novacaine," "Too Much Too Soon" and "21 Guns."

One Night of Queen, performed by Gary Mullen and The Works, is a live concert "that recreates the look, sound, pomp and showmanship of one of the greatest rock bands of all time," a news release from The Mahaffey said.

The band has been playing Queen songs for sold-out houses around the world since 2002, the announcement said.

Both "American Idiot" and One Night of Queen are presented by The Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts.
