Englebert Humperdinck coming to Mahaffey Theater

Legendary British pop singer Englebert Humperdinck is coming to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg in September.

Tickets for the Sept. 11 show are $39, $49, $59 and $69, and will go on sale at noon May 10 online at TheMahaffey.com, by phone at (727) 893-7832 or in person at The Mahaffey Theater Box Office.

Humperdinck’s best known songs are 1967’s “Release Me,” which kept the Beatles’ “Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever” single from topping the British charts, and 1976’s “After the Lovin.”

Humperdinck, born Arnold George Dorsey, was known on stage as “Gerry Dorsey” and took his name from a 19th century German composer of operas, on the suggestion of his manager in the mid-1960s.

Humperdinck has released more than 80 albums, earning 63 gold, 24 platinum record awards, four Grammy nominations and a Golden Globe for “Entertainer of the Year” (1988).

Humperdinck will soon release an album of duets featuring recordings of his best-known songs with guest stars Smokey Robinson, Willie Nelson, Charles Aznavour and Kenny Rogers.
