DADE CITY — Malik Johns returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a score and found the end zone three more times in the third quarter as Pasco blanked Wesley Chapel (0-3).
Held to 42 yards of offense in the first half, with no first downs, the Pirates (2-1) went off in the third quarter, racking up 184 yards and 27 points. Johns, who caught four passes for 139 yards and had four carries for 44 yards, scored on a 12-yard run and on passes of 58 and 49 yards from backup quarterback Grant Starling.
Starling, who replaced injured starter Ben Chandler in the third quarter, completed four of six passes for 125 yards.
The Pasco defense was suffocating all night, recording four interceptions and five sacks. Jacob Morphew registered three sacks and forced a fumble, while Phillip Wilson picked off two passes for the Pirates. Wilson’s second interception, a 39-yard return for a touchdown late in the third quarter, forced a running clock in the fourth.
Pirates coach Tom McHugh has now beaten the Wildcats, his former team, for the sixth consecutive time.
