Wet start to July as showers blanket Tampa Bay area

Published:   |   Updated: July 1, 2013 at 05:56 AM

Anyone hoping the start of a new month would mean relief from an unusually soggy June are going to be disappointed, at least for a few days.

Showers are moving onshore from the Gulf into Pinellas County and pushing through the Tampa Bay region, creating another wet commute, News Channel 8 meteorologist Leigh Spann said.

The rain will continue off and on throughout the day, with pockets of heavy showers and lightning possible and rain chances remaining at 70 percent.

Highs will stay below 90.

Showers will continue overnight, especially near the coast, and above-average rain chances will remain until Wednesday, but decrease in time for the Fourth of July.

As of Sunday evening, 10.34 inches of rain had fallen during the month, according to Robert Garcia, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin. June typically averages 6.39 inches of rain.
