Flip & Rick Miller's Tips for Planting in Pots

Published:

All topsoil is not created equal. Remember to match the soil in your container to the type of plants you want to grow.

To grow tropical plants, blend regular potting mix with aged cow manure and a timed-release fertilizer.

To grow succulents, use equal parts of potting mix, perlite and coarse horticultural sand or gravel to allow drainage.

To lighten containers - and promote drainage - place a layer of packing peanuts in the bottom of a large container, add 2 to 4 inches of potting mix, followed by another layer of peanuts and then more soil to fill.

Never use reclaimed water on any herbs or plants that you intend to eat.
