MOSCOW (AP) — A Chechen man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the killing of a disgraced Russian army colonel who kidnapped and strangled a teenage Chechen girl.
Yusup Temerkhanov was convicted in Moscow City Court last week and sentenced Tuesday for the 2011 murder of Yuri Budanov.
Budanov was arrested in 2000 and convicted of killing 18-year-old Heda Kungayeva while commanding a tank regiment. His 2008 parole angered Chechens, but Russian ultra-nationalists and neo-Nazis lionized him.
Investigators allege Temerkhanov and two unnamed accomplices shot Budanov out of hatred for veterans of two separatist wars in Chechnya, both of which activists say featured staggering human rights abuses. Temerkhanov's father was killed in a counter-terrorist operation in 2000, during the second war.
The 40-something Temerkhanov is expected to appeal his conviction.
