ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is standing by his special teams coach.
The Redskins have arguably the worst special teams in the NFL, and they hit a new low in a 31-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys that dropped Washington to 1-4.
Washington gave up a punt return for a touchdown and a 90-yard kickoff return that led to another touchdown. There were also four special teams penalties, including one on special teams coach Keith Burns for getting in the way of an official.
But Shanahan said Monday that Burns is "very capable."
Shanahan instead cited the lack of player leadership following the departure of standout Lorenzo Alexander as a free agent in the offseason.
Said Shanahan: "Lorenzo Alexander's not going to show up, so somebody's got to take control."
Washington hosts Chicago on Sunday.
