ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Despite Robert Griffin III's preseason struggles, there is no quarterback controversy with the Washington Redskins — and Kirk Cousins knows that better than anybody.
Cousins is starting his third season as Griffin's understudy. It's a job he fully understands and one that has involved more work over the past two years than he could have imagined.
Since both were drafted in 2012, Cousins has subbed for Griffin in some form or fashion in eight regular season games and one playoff game.
Cousins will start the preseason finale Thursday against Tampa Bay while Griffin gets a night off.
Says Cousins: "I try to fill the role that the coach and the organization asks of me. And what they've asked of me is to be a backup. I can't create a role that's not there."
