CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians All-Star Justin Masterson threw a bullpen session and said his side injury has improved.
Masterson, who has been out almost three weeks with a strained oblique, threw 33 pitches on Friday and said "it went great." He did not feel any pain and the right-hander is encouraged. He is scheduled to have another bullpen workout on Sunday. It's still possible the 14-game winner could pitch again this season if the Indians make the AL playoffs.
Masterson has been out since Sept. 2, when he was removed in the second inning of a start against Baltimore. The Indians have managed to stay in contention without their ace and enter the weekend one-half game out of a wild-card spot.
Masterson, who has developed into a front-of-the-rotation pitcher, said he will not rush back.
