Recalled beef stores may include GFS in Tampa area

GFS Marketplace locations in the Tampa Bay area are on a list of stores that may have received recalled ground beef, federal officials said.

Officials said the beef, which may be contaminated with E. coli, was sent to stores in 10 states.

The only Bay area locations on the list were Gorden Food Service Marketplaces. The company website lists seven local addresses in Carrollwood, Brandon, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Lakeland, Bradenton and Sarasota.

The Surf N Turf Market in Sebring and Giorgio’s Italian Deli in Stuart are the other Florida locations.

According to an announcement Thursday, the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said it has reason to believe recalled beef was also sent to retail outlets in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Wolverine Packing Co. in Detroit announced Monday it was recalling 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli.

The food safety service had said 11 people were sickened. Messages seeking an updated figure were left Friday.

Consumers can see a list of recalled products and potentially affected stores on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s website.
