The Republican Party of Sarasota, saying Donald Trump is "bigger than Isaac," will go on with plans to honor the celebrity entrepreneur at a dinner tonight.
Trump is expected to be the guest of honor at an event at Sarasota's Ritz-Carlton. He's being named Statesman of the Year by the Sarasota Republican Party.
Trump will not take part in any Republican National Convention events in Tampa but will still make an appearance at the dinner, organizers said.
He is expected to attend the sold-out dinner event despite the threat of tropical weather from Isaac, but the party said in a release that he'd return to New York after the event.
"This is one of the largest crowds ever to come together for a dinner in the history of Sarasota and one of the largest ticketed events during the entire convention week, and the event will go on as planned," local party chairman Joe Gruters said.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to start rolling through southwest Florida by late Sunday as Isaac passes into the Gulf of Mexico. The storm led national party officials to postpone business at the RNC a day, from Monday to Tuesday.
Trump previously tweeted that he'd have an RNC surprise on Monday night at the convention.
