JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The chairman of the state Republican party is apologizing for saying he doesn't buy the argument that Anchorage police and fire jobs are dangerous.
Peter Goldberg made the comment in an email to Anchorage Assemblyman Bill Starr surrounding a fight over a municipal labor law. It was posted on radio talk show host Casey Reynolds' Facebook page and immediately criticized by the state Democratic party.
Goldberg apologized for the comment Wednesday, saying there's certainly an element of danger to serving as a police officer or firefighter. He says if he could rewrite that line, he would.
He says municipal salaries are too high and the point he was trying to make was that average military police officers earn less than municipal officers and are more likely to get hurt.
