Protests during the Republican National Convention generally were peaceful and left little damage, but that doesn't mean the potential didn't exist for violence.
Police seized metal poles, concrete blocks and other items they said could have been used as weapons by protesters.
The caches were scattered throughout downtown, Tampa police Chief Jane Castor said.
Officers found the items as far north as Scott Street and as far south as Whiting Street, about two blocks from the Forum, where the GOP convention sessions were held.
"This appeared to be the work of several groups," Castor said. "We can't say definitely that all these items were to be used as weapons. But if we cleaned them up and more were stashed again, we suspect they were."
