LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State Sen. Beau McCoy's Republican campaign for Nebraska governor has received an $860,000 boost from former candidate Charles Herbster.
McCoy jumped into the race last month after Herbster, who is a Falls City businessman, abandoned his campaign.
Herbster says he's backing McCoy because he believes the Omaha lawmaker is the kind of conservative leader the state needs.
Herbster's donation includes $594,000 in cash and more than $265,000 in consultant services that have already been paid for.
McCoy says the donation will help his campaign start off on a solid foundation. But he's still planning to focus on travelling the state in his truck and talking to Nebraskans about issues they're concerned about.
McCoy is one of five Republican candidates to replace Republican Gov. Dave Heineman. Two Democrats are also running.
