MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — State Rep. Joe Carr is planning to make what his campaign is calling a "major announcement" in the 4th Congressional District race on Tuesday.
Carr and state Sen. Jim Tracy of Shelbyville are both challenging embattled incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais for the Republican nomination next year.
DesJarlais, a Jasper physician, officially launched his bid for a third term earlier this month. He brushed aside criticism over his past infidelities and having once encouraged his wife and a lover to seek abortions.
Tracy has led the field in fundraising, reporting more than $650,000 on hand through the first half of the year. Carr was next with $275,000, while DesJarlais had $88,000.
The largely rural 15-country district spans from the suburbs of Nashville to the outskirts of Chattanooga.
