A driving instructor with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office was injured Tuesday when a deputy taking part in a training exercise steered into him, the agency said.

Deputy Charles Wise, an instructor with the sheriff’s office training department, was taken to Blake Medical Center’s emergency room for treatment and released, the sheriff’s office said.

The incident happened at 8:51 a.m. at DeSoto Square Mall, 303 301 Blvd. W., Bradneton, deputies said. Wise was standing just off the course when he was struck by a car driven by Deputy Darral Davis, the sheriff’s office said.

Davis, who is assigned to courthouse security, was taking park in an exercise on evasive manuevers. He turned early while entering another lane, the sheriff’s office said.

The car was going 25 to 30 mph when Wise was hit, the sheriff’s office said.

Emergency personnel was called and transported Wise to the hospital. Details on his injuries were not released.
